Purpose and ScopeAsia Advanced Technology Center has an open position for an Engineer/Scientist to lead research and development (R&D) of industrial gas application technologies in glassmaking, iron/steel (ferrous metals), non-ferrous metals, especially in combustion and furnace processes related to heating, melting, and oxidation reactions. The incumbent is expected to drive successful R&D efforts that enables rapid business growth for company products: applications equipment and industrial gases (Nitrogen, Oxygen, Argon, Helium, and Hydrogen). This applications development role will prioritize, plan and execute projects to develop, transfer, and commercialize technology offerings and conduct customer trials. She/he will work closely with global combustion team and interact with Asia Commercial Technology (CT) and Marketing teams to support sub-regional business and sales activities. This role may extend to other application areas in environmental preservation, energy generation/chemical industry (coal, natural gas, petroleum refinery, or petrochemicals), chemical manufacturing, or related fields. The position is based in China, with 30% travel for customer or partner visits across Asia. Primary responsibilities This position is responsible for new idea generation, laboratory setup, development gas applications, technical documentation and offering packages, technical publications, customer demo trials, and implementation of process solutions at customer sites. Examples of gas applications may include full oxygen-fuel combustion (oxy-fuel), Oxygen lancing/enrichment/boosting, glass and metal melting, process controls, flue gas treatment, or emission reduction. Target customer products covers a wide range of variety: flat glass, fiber glass, display glass, iron, steel, copper, lead, aluminum, recycle metals, or electric and thermal energy generated from fuel combustion. Generate and evaluate innovative ideas of industrial gas applications in the target market segment. Build a healthy long-term pipeline of technology development to differentiate company in the marketplace. Strong project management skills. Plan and execute application development projects by leading internal cross-functional teams. Effectively leverage and pull all possible external resources to speed up the progress and achieve technical and business goals. Use scientific principles in industrial gases and combustion processing to invent attractive technology that differentiates our offerings in the market place. Work closely with commercial technology, marketing, and business teams within Asia region for new application ideas and improvements of existing offerings. Support market promotion, identify opportunities for penetration into key customers and commercialization of existing technology to compete/win/retain gas business.Establish technical collaboration and networking with top industry players. Develop a close relationship and high reputation within the Asia food community (suppliers, industry, research institutes, associations, government). Present technical papers in related conferences or magazines and support market promotion and technical branding.Set up and upgrade Asia Lab to showcase and support development efforts and customer demo trials. Work closely with global counterparts for transfer and localization of application offerings and best-known practices to benefit Asia business. Job requirementsThe position requires an advanced degree in Thermal Energy, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with >3 years of industrial and R&D experience in manufacturing process and equipment related to combustion. The incumbent must be an experienced researcher passionate about disruptive innovation, with strong technical competency, good business and market sense, and technical selling/marketing skills. Must be proficient in product application development process flow and customer interactions. Prior experience with proven success in the following areas is strongly preferred: glass manufacturing, iron/steel processing and equipment, metal refinery, CFD modeling, and industrial gas manufacturing and applications. Have a high degree of hands-on equipment experience, with strong underlying engineering, project management, and execution skills. Be proficient or interested in learning how to develop attractive proposals with both technical and commercial contents to win sales from potential prospects.Must be result driven and possess strong desire for success, can-do attitude, with demonstrated behaviors in aiming high, self-initiation, proactive follow-up to drive projects to successful end results. Think creatively in finding alternative solutions to a problem. Solid background in six sigma practice and Blackbelt methodology is highly desirable. Be well organized with exceptional knowledge management and documentation skills.Excellent communication skills in presenting complex technical concepts to customers or business team.Employs all safety standards in daily work.Chinese as native language and excellent English language skills.
